How Thermogenesis Works

Thermogenesis is the production of heat by the body. It happens constantly, driven by basic cellular activity, digestion, movement, and temperature regulation. When supplement labels mention thermogenic support, they are referring to ingredients studied for small increases in this energy output.

Total daily energy expenditure has four components: resting metabolic rate, the thermic effect of food, deliberate exercise, and non-exercise activity such as fidgeting and walking. Resting metabolic rate is the largest slice for most people, and non-exercise activity is the most variable.

Thermogenic ingredients such as green tea catechins and capsaicinoids have been studied for modest increases in resting expenditure. The realistic magnitude in published trials is small — the sort of difference that matters over months of consistent dieting, not over a single day.

The practical takeaway is that thermogenesis is a supporting mechanism, not a lever you can pull hard. Total food intake and training volume dominate the equation. Treat thermogenic support as a marginal gain layered on top of a solid plan.
